One Year Ago

I used to live not far from where this was shot - only two blocks to the right really. It's amazing how fast time goes and it's a little strange to think that I've been in Germany for one year now. Exactly one year.

Way at the end of Robson street you can barely see The Dome which is now no longer a dome. It's lost its marshmallow roof and I don't know what the new nickname will be.

Still with sports, the Canucks are headed to the Stanley Cup finals having beaten San Jose with a truly improbable goal. Hey, we'll take it no matter how strange. I'd be a little sour if I was a Sharks fan but the simple fact is, being down 3-1 in the series and facing elimination, they weren't getting it done. The blown (if it was truly blown) icing call at the end of the third didn't sink the sharks, losing three games before that did.

The last time they got this far, I had also moved away from Vancouver but not nearly as far; only near Banff. It sucks to not be there to listen to the west end erupt in celebration with each goal and win. It was really amazing to actually hear the cheers spread from apartment to apartment as 50,000+ people signalled the good news. As difficult as it is with the time difference, I'm watching the games on satellite when I can or streaming them when I can't catch them live.

Do I miss it? It's people I miss, not the place. Vancouver is a beautiful and awesome place but, baring a huge natural catastrophe, it will always be there. It's the same for Canada as a whole. I'm content with that. I'll always be from Vancouver, I'll visit it again, I'm still connected to it and am able to check up on it through the amazing interwebs.
